The Indian Community in South Africa

Abstract

The dissertation is concerning the Indian community in South Africa: the development of political movements up to 1946. I have divided my work into three chapters. The first one entitled the beginnings of Indians in South Africa and discrimination in which I have dealt with the early days of the Indians in the country as indentured labourers, then the coming of free Indians who came at their own expense and established communities there. I have also treated the oppression and discrimination which the Indians faced and the coming of Gandhi into South Africa. The second chapter deals with the Indian political movements internally. The Indians started to enter the political life in South Africa and affected the whole country. The last chapter covers the period which preceded the Second World War and how Indians transformed their issue into the international level using the UN Charter as a means of pressure on the Union Government.
