ABSTRACT This research examines the relationships between memory, writing, and History in the work of Rachid Boudjedra, based on a corpus of three novels: Hôtel Saint-Georges, Les Figuiers de Barbarie, and Printemps. It explores how Boudjedra’s novelistic writing narrates complex historical events_ from colonization to the Black Decade, including October 1988 and the Arab Spring_ through a troubled, subjective, and often fragmented memory. The objective is to understand how Boudjedra, by interweaving intimate and collective memory, offers a critical rereading of History through a postcolonial aesthetic. By adopting a transdisciplinary approach_ combining psychoanalysis, philosophy, memory sociology, and postcolonial theory_ this study demonstrates that Boudjedra’s writing, imbued with universality, intertextuality, and visual imagery, uses trauma, fantasy, and delirium as narrative devices. Through a hybrid, fragmented, and circular autofiction, the author constructs a subversive counter-history that rejects ideological closures and engages in a genuine politics of memory and a philosophy of History. This autofiction is also marked by chronic unrest, expressed by the narrator as a malaise in the face of the failed revolutionary ideal, the disappointment of independence, and the dead ends of the present. This postcolonial disenchantment forms one of the work's core inquiries. The work also highlights the intergenerational transmission of trauma by exploring the links between subjectivity, inherited silence, and narrativity. The novel becomes a space of confrontation between dominant narratives and marginalized voices, between the individual and the collective, between myth and reality. By confronting mythical figures, historical distortions, and post-independence illusions, Boudjedra situates his work within a committed postcolonial perspective, where literature becomes a space for resistance, critique, and symbolic reconstruction. This study thus invites a rethinking of Boudjedra’s work, through his novels, as a space for literary creation and reflection on the self, the past, and History. |
