Northern Algeria is endowed with a significant number of springs, exhibiting a wide range of temperatures and mineralizations. This research aims to highlight the typology of the hydrogeological functioning mechanisms of thermal springs in northwestern part of the country. Efficient and rational exploitation of thermal emergences requires a thorough evaluation of reservoir characteristics and a good understanding of the functioning modalities of this precious resource. The study area includes several important springs in Northwestern Algeria, for which a multidisciplinary approach has been applied. Hydrothermalism serves as a gateway to a better understanding of deep geology. The hydrothermal circuit is a geological structure traversed by a water flow. These circuits exist in both active magmatic and sedimentary geological contexts. Specific geological structures allow thermal water to reach the surface. The sustainability of the resource largely depends on the stability of the circuit's geological structures, the physico-chemical conditions of the water, and surface climatic conditions. Thermal springs are considered a sequence of the water cycle, as indicated by the results of geochemical and isotopic modeling studies. Isotopic analyses of the thermal-mineral waters studied reveal a meteoric origin. Rainwater is recharged on high-altitude summits through infiltration, undergoing a long journey to emerge at the surface in low-altitude areas. The overall circuit is characterized by a rapid pressure transfer function and very slow fluid movement. The diversity of spring waters is linked to the regional or local geological and tectonic context specific to each hydrothermal system. The hydrothermal system's originality stems from the functioning mechanisms it follows. To better understand the parameters directly or indirectly influencing the functioning of thermal-mineral springs, studying the regional context is necessary. Several points arise from previous studies. Generally, many authors have shown particular interest in hydrothermalism and agree on the close relationship between thermal emergences and fractured or jointed zones, as well as volcanic phenomena. The maximum temperatures of the deep reservoir are estimated using chemical geothermometers. The calculated temperatures reflect the depths at which the waters circulate. This type of information can provide a basis for interpreting geological structures and data. The study of several important thermal springs in the northwest sector through a multidisciplinary approach addresses the typology of structures related to the functioning of these significant springs based on available data. The tectonic history or heritage, the geometry of the structures, the style, and the kinematics of faults favor the hydrothermal circuit. Using various scientific disciplines helps to understand the hydrogeological functioning of thermal-mineral springs and thus accurately define the origin of mineralizations, thermal properties, and gas emissions. Emphasis is placed on tectonic structures serving as conduits for the ascent of hot waters to the surface. Thermal water springs are formed from meteoric waters, which circulate at great depths facilitated by fracture networks. Consequently, these types of springs acquire physico-chemical properties different from those of cold springs. The specific characteristics of these waters are closely linked to the high temperatures of the deep reservoir. |
