Résumé: This study aims to assess flood risks in the city of Laghouat using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing. A Water-level-based flood inundation scenarios forthe M'zi Valley was carried out to determine the impact of changes in water levels on the surrounding areas. Factors such as slope, hydrographic network density, elevation and land cover were also integrated using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to create a flood hazard map. The accuracy of this model was verified by the relevant authorities and the local population. This study presents a flood hazard map for Laghouat, created using geographic information systems, which provides decision-makers with a scientific basis for urban planning that takes these risks into account.
Description: Floods are among the most frequent and destructive natural disasters worldwide, causing severe human and economic losses. Flash floods in arid and semi-arid regions pose a serious threat due to their immense destructive power and the element of surprise. Algeria has experienced numerous devastating flash floods, the most significant of which were the Bab El Oued flood in Algiers in 2001, the Oued Mezab flood in Ghardaïa in 2008, and the Oued M’zi flood in Laghouat in 2016; these floods caused severe material damage and loss of life.
