The Welfare State was at the heart of the Labour Party and social democratic politics since the Second World War. The collective and universal provision of welfare services, social security, health, education and housing would guard against poverty, promote equality and underpin citizenship and social cohesion. Labour’s social democrats believed that welfare should be provided by the state, paid for out of taxation and administered as a public service. It should not be left to the market. This article tries to discuss the Welfare State during the reign of Tony Blair from 1997 till 2007.en_US
