This study examines the design and use of French as a Foreign Language (FLE) textbooks in Algerian middle schools. It highlights their didactic, institutional, and social functions, while questioning the extent to which the socioconstructivist principles introduced by the 2003 educational reforms have been incorporated and how they influence the teaching and learning of the language. To conduct this research, a methodological triangulation was adopted, combining a comparative analysis of three textbooks (2003, 2010, and 2016), classroom observations to confront official prescriptions with actual practices, and a questionnaire survey addressed to middle school teachers to better understand their perceptions and uses of the textbook. The findings reveal a gap between official intentions and their effective implementation. The first-generation textbooks incorporate socioconstructivism only partially, the 2010 edition introduces inductive and cooperative approaches, though still heavily guided, the 2016 textbook, apparently more aligned with socioconstructivist principles, faces significant implementation challenges due to the density of tasks and the complexity of materials. The study shows that the textbook, far from being a neutral tool, reflects institutional directives, pedagogical choices, and classroom practices. While the reforms have led to some progress, their impact remains limited in the absence of real continuity between prescriptions, textbook content, and classroom use. The research therefore argues for the development of new textbooks, better suited to learners’ needs and more consistent with socioconstructivist principles. |
