Abstract: Sediments rich in microfossils from the Lower and Middle Miocene have enabled improved biostratigraphy of the Oued Rhiou geological series (southern margin of the Lower Chelif basin). The calibration between the calcareous nannoplankton biozone markers (Helicosphaera ampliaperta, Sphenolithus heteromorphus) and planktonic foraminifera (Globigerinoides trilobus, Gs. sicanus without Praeorbulina) from the Oued Taberket and Sidi El Rhorb sections corresponds to the latest Burdigalian. The Langhian age of Oued Boutelis is based on Globorotalia siakensis, Praeorbulina glomerosa curva and P. glomerosa glomerosa, associated with S. heteromorphus, H. ampliaperta and ostracods. Thus, these sections include the Burdigalian-Langhian boundary (biozones N8/NN4). This boundary correlates well with the generally accepted one (15.974 Ma). Through successive biozones (N9/NN4 upper to N10 lower), the Oued Boutelis section reaches the upper Langhian. The Langhian–Serravallian boundary, corresponding to the upper N10, lower NN6 and MMi6 biozones, is defined in the Sidi Bou-Kebar section by the presence of Globorotalia praemenardii and the absence of G. peripheroronda and S. heteromorphus. This section extends to the upper Serravallian, attested by the first appearance of Paragloborotalia mayeri, marking biozones N12, upper NN6 and MMi7b. These results reveal the existence of a broad subsidence trough located in the north-western piedmont of the Ouarsenis, thus constituting an important site for this sedimentation. Its filling began at the latest Burdigalian and ended in the upper Serravallian; it is characterized by transgressive-regressive sequences correlated with global fluctuations in eustatic cycles (TB2.3 to TB2.6). These illustrate six phases of marine and sub-aquatic detrital sedimentation separated by several discontinuities (boundaries), mainly: the Burdigalian-Langhian, the Langhian-Serravallian and the Serravallian-Tortonian. The first phase (deep) tends towards a coastal detrital environment, the second being marked by a high-energy sub- to mid-littoral coastal detrital environment. They illustrate an obvious eustatic and tectonic evolution, reflecting significant subsidence. A hyperpycnal delta initiated the third phase, gradually evolving towards a deep environment. Intense erosion and the development of an evaporitic environment mark the fourth phase, linked to local tectonic uplift. This is followed by the fifth phase, which shows the establishment of an unstable coastal system, influenced by discontinuous terrigenous inputs and punctuated by syn-sedimentary volcanic activity. Finally, the sixth phase reflects a transition to a sub-aquatic environment of the alluvial cone or debris cone type, marking the end of marine dynamics and significant erosion of the relief in this series. The characteristics of the palaeontological environment indicate the presence of warm thermal conditions from the late Burdigalian to the Langhian and transitional conditions from the late Langhian to the Serravallian in the northern Algerian basins. The landscape would have been marked by mangroves on the shores. These thermal conditions are reminiscent of those described for the Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum (MMCO) followed by the Middle Miocene Transitional Climate (MMTC). | en_US |
