This doctoral dissertation explores the economic impact of the association agreements concluded between the European Union (EU) and two Maghreb countries—Algeria and Tunisia—on foreign direct investment (FDI) attractiveness and economic growth, over the period 1990–2022. Through a comparative and econometric approach, the study aims to assess the effectiveness of these agreements as strategic instruments for development in the region. The empirical methodology is based on the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model, allowing the estimation of both short-term and long-term effects of the association agreements on FDI inflows and GDP growth. The findings indicate that Tunisia has benefited more significantly from the agreement, with increased FDI and economic performance, whereas the results for Algeria appear more mixed, due to structural and institutional constraints. The thesis concludes that the success of association agreements largely depends on preconditions such as institutional stability, effective trade openness, and reform capacity. It highlights the importance of adopting tailored national strategies and strengthening Euro-Maghreb cooperation to foster inclusive and sustainable development. | en_US |
