Abstract This study examines the contribution of Islamic movements to the process of democratic transition in the Arab world, through a comparative analysis of the experience of the Ennahda Movement in Tunisia and the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt during the period from 2010 to 2021. The Arab uprisings during this time represented a pivotal historical moment that led to the fall of several political regimes, while simultaneously offering political Islam movements a unique opportunity to ascend to prominence within the political arena. The study is guided by the following central research question:To what extent have Islamic movements contributed to the democratic transition process? And how have the Ennahda Movement in Tunisia and the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt influenced the democratic transition? To address this question and test the underlying hypotheses, the study is structured into three chapters. The first chapter is dedicated to the theoretical and conceptual foundations of the study’s variables. The second chapter explores the actual status of Islamic movements in both Tunisia and Egypt. The third chapter presents a comparative analysis of the contributions made by Ennahda and the Muslim Brotherhood to the democratic transition process, assessed through three key indicators: political institutions, political pluralism, and civil rights and freedoms. The findings of the study indicate that Islamic movements have largely accepted democracy, particularly in its instrumental form, following a process of gradual and in-depth internal revisions. Moreover, the study reveals that the engagement of both Ennahda and the Muslim Brotherhood with domestic political environments was predominantly characterised by conflict rather than cooperation. Finally, it concludes that the interaction of Islamic movements with the indicators of democratic transition in both countries was not uniform; rather, there were both similarities and divergences in their approaches and outcomes. In response to the research question, the study concludes that the contribution of Islamic movements to the democratic transition between 2010 and 2021 was relative and limited, owing to a combination of internal and external factors. Furthermore, their engagement with the trajectory of democratic transformation was varied and far from homogenous. Keywords: Islamic movements, democratic transition, Arab world, Ennahda Movement, Muslim Brotherhood.
