كلمات مفتاحية : نورمن مايلر، غور فيدال، م ا ب ع د ا ل ح د ا ث ة، المعارضة السياسية، الرئيس، المثقف، الإعلّم xi Résumé La présente thèse analyse la représentation de la résistance politique dans l’oeuvre romanesque des deux écrivains américains Norman Mailer et Gore Vidal, en particulier dans quatre romans de Mailer ainsi que dans la série historique de Vidal, dite «narratives of empire ». The Armies of the Night. It, accordingly, tests the claim that the historical novel as a sub-genre may overlap with the political novel, and can be used as a means of political dissent just as it may serve as a vehicle to glorify nationalism. It argues that the two chosen writers do not refrain from discussing dissent and dissenters in their novelistic production. It does so by, first, pointing out the portrayal of American presidents as a manifestation of the authors’ opposition to post- war American policies. Then, it demonstrates that Mailer reflects his passionate opposition and vehement criticism of American presidents (who allowed U.S. military intervention in Vietnam, Iraq and other countries) in his The Armies of the Night, Why Are We in Vietnam, and that Vidal does the same in Lincoln, Empire, Washington DC, and 1876. The representation of American presidents is also studied to find out whether the authors confirm the glorious image of the presidential institution or reveal the reality, whether they distinguish the presidents from the presidency, the office from its occupants. It equally deals with the presidential “inherent powers” in wartime and whether they are abused to encroach on the dearly-held, much-celebrated American individual liberties. The representation of the long process of presidential election in Vidal’s Washington D.C. and 1876 is then elucidated. viii Eventually, focus is concentrated on the role of intellectuals in opposing the American political status-quo. Because politics is usually the playground of the intellectual, an inquiry is carried out about the political positions taken by Mailer’s and Vidal’s intellectual characters in Barbary Shore and Washington D.C., respectively, followed by their categorisation either as conformists or dissenters. Finally, media’s double role both as repressive tool against political dissidents and as vehicle for political opposition is explored, with particular attention to the mainstream papers’ distorting coverage of Mailer’s march on the Pentagon as narrated in The Armies of the Night. Adopting the comparative approach, and historicism when needed, this thesis concludes with the convictions that Mailer and Vidal spilled their proverbial political opposition on their novels, using them to draw parallels with and decry an unsatisfying reality; that postmodern novels are not necessarily apolitical; and that the two contemporary authors share too many things in political stance and fiction-writing than an observer of their personal enmity might believe. | en_US |
