The theme of this thesis concerns reason and unreason in the thought of René Descartes, as seen through the lens of Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida. It focuses on the debate between Foucault and Derrida surrounding Descartes' First Meditation on Madness, exploring the question of the exclusion of madness by the thinking subject in the context of Foucault and Derrida's polemic, and identifying madness by defining it and situating it within its historical and intellectual context. This work is structured in three parts: The first part identifies the concepts of reason and unreason within their historical context. It examines Descartes's vision of reason and unreason. The second part is devoted to reason and unreason in René Descartes's thought, discussing knowledge, doubt and the need for certainty, as well as illusion and dreams, culminating in Descartes's view of madness in his First Meditation. Finally, the third part examined the famous quarrel between Foucault and Derrida, their interpretation of Descartes' text, their responses, and the continuation of this debate through the work of Jean-Marie Beyssade, Ferdinand Alquié, Lacan, and Le thème de cette thèse porte sur la raison et la déraison chez René Descartes entre Michel Foucault et Jacques Derrida. |
