The Representation of Soueif’s Female Characters as Suffocating and Liberating Phoenixes. Case Study: Aisha and The Map of Love

Titre: The Representation of Soueif’s Female Characters as Suffocating and Liberating Phoenixes. Case Study: Aisha and The Map of Love
Auteur(s): Brahimi, Samira
The Sandpiper (1996), The Map of Love (1999).
The representations of Arab and Muslim women, narrowly related to the perceptions of
women in general, have long incarnated women as a strange Other and weak entities
dependent on their male counterparts. Eastern women, in particular, have also been portrayed
as sexual objects, sin perpetrators, and exoticised creatures feeding age old Orientalist
fantasies.
The Egyptian writer and activist, Ahdaf Soueif, has long fought for the eradication of such
stereotyped portraits painting different pictures of her female protagonists as liberated
phoenixes ready to start life anew. The current research explores the myriad representations
Soueif grants to the set forth protagonists in her fiction works respectively: Aisha (1983), The
Sandpiper (1996), and The Map of Love (1999). However, one noticed that the author’s
perceptions oscillates between a demystification of the stereotyped portraits and a
confirmation of them, sometimes picturing her female protagonists as limited, male dependent
and nostalgic. This research also scrutinizes the writer’s use of time past as an element of
liberation of her female characters, granting them constant flashbacks to reconsider their past
in order to better live and understand their present and future.
Chapter one focuses on the scrutiny of two important concepts, namely, Other and women,
from postcolonial and feminist perspectives. It also explores understandings of keywords like
strangeness, difference, stereotype, representation, crisis of identity, ideology, racism,
essentialism, and hybridity. The concept of women has also been explored from a post
colonial feminist critique perspective eradicating the difference between ‘first world’ and
‘third world women’. Besides, this concept has been analysed from religious, historical and
literary stand points.
Chapter two offers a scrutiny of the eight narratives constituting Aisha, Soueif’s first
collection of short stories. A special consideration has been offered to the ‘double portrait’
Soueif grants her female protagonists and the use of time past gearing narration forward.
Aisha is knitted as a seemingly separate collection of female narratives centring on one
character which is that of Aisha.
Chapter three investigates the same ‘double portrait’ in The Sandpiper Soueif’s second
collection of seven short stories. Yet, in this collection the author utilises Eastern and Western
female protagonists and allows their stories to intermingle and travel throughout time to paint
one single portrait which is that of resilient phoenixes resurrecting from the ashes of an
uncertain nostalgic past.
Chapter four focuses on the same ‘genus portrait’ in The Map of Love, Soueif’s second
novel. However, in this novel the intensity of the dual picture falters as Soueif portrays female
characters both, Eastern and Western that are ready to demystify the stereotypical portrait
most cherished in the West, and that incarnates women as sex-objects, weak, and male
dependent.

Titre: Definitely Foreign ... Absolutely Arabic The Difficulties Encountered by Foreigners Learning Arabic as a Foreign Language
Auteur(s): ZITOUNI, Amina
Résumé: The study of phonological differences encountered by foreigners learning Arabic as a foreign language is crucial in understanding the complexities of language acquisition in a bilingual or multilingual context. Arabic, a Semitic Language, exhibits a distinct phonetic system characterised by emphatic, pharyngeal, and guttural sounds. This unique phonological system can lead to significant challenges, such as mispronunciation and difficulty in recognizing similar sounds. This research aims to examine the perception and production of consonant contrasts among non-native speakers of Arabic, and it investigates the different sounds that seem challenging for speakers of other languages, mainly native speakers of English and French. Through a triangulation method, interviews were conducted with teachers of Arabic to speakers of other languages in Turkey. NVIVO software was used to analyse the interviews’ transcripts. A questionnaire was designed for learners of Arabic as a foreign language in several institutions in Jordan, Egypt, and Turkey, besides a quasi-experiment held at the Department of Foreign Languages at Tahri Mohamed University Bechar. International students have been recorded, and their recordings were analyzed using PRAAT software. The findings revealed that AFL learners face difficulties producing pharyngeal and emphatic sounds with different levels of difficulty. This research contributes to the understanding of phonological challenges in learning Arabic as a foreign language. It offers practical recommendations for teachers and learners to enhance the learning and teaching process.

American Foreign Policy in the Middle East after 1945 Case Study: Iraq Syria

Titre: American Foreign Policy in the Middle East after 1945 Case Study: Iraq Syria
Auteur(s): NEBEG, Raouf
Résumé: After the Second World War the American main stream media, through propaganda techniques, was convincing the people that a huge U.S military establishment was necessary to contain an expansionist world Communist movement with its headquarters in Moscow. Britain was the dominant Western power in the Middle East until the1960s, and U.S. influence was countered in much of the region by the Soviet Union until the end of the Cold War. The collapse of the Soviet empire created a power vacuum which has been filled by the U.S., first in the Persian Gulf following the Gulf war, and later in Central Asia as a result of the Afghan war. The United States used its power to safeguard all its national interests in the region. For instance, invading Iraq; some national interests are in some ways contradictory to each other. For example, the security of Israel through weakening its neighbors like Syria; and the need for oil from the Arab states in the region. The indifference of much of the national security elite and the public to the region, in between crises, permitted U.S. policy to be dominated by two U.S. domestic lobbies, one ethnic and one economic—the Israel lobby and the oil industry.
