Thermal method of remote sensing for prediction and monitoring Earthquake

Titre: Thermal method of remote sensing for prediction and monitoring Earthquake
Auteur(s): Hassini, Abdelatif
Résumé: Analyzing past earthquakes and their
characteristics, perhaps a better understanding about the
earthquake phenomena can be made. Pressure built-up due to
tectonic activities and also associated subsurface degassing might
create changes in thermal regime and if by any technique this
change is detected, it can provide very important clues about
future earthquake activities. Passive thermal satellite remote
sensing which can sense the earth’s surface emissivity at regular
interval introduces a new way of analyzing this phenomenon. A
method using MSG-SEVIRI (METEOSAT Second Generation-
Spinning in Visible and InfraRed Imager) thermal infrared time
series datasets is developed and applied in this research, AEPA (
Active Earthquake Prediction Algorithm) method can depict
some anomalous increases in surface temperature that occur
before an earthquake. One past earthquakes in Oran (Algeria)
from June, 06 2008 was analyzed for studying the thermal
changes before and after the earthquakes. The study was
successful in detecting pre-earthquake thermal anomalies prior
to all these earthquakes. Significant thermal anomalies with a
rise in temperature of about 4-6°K in the vicinity of the
epicenters have been observed. The anomalies disappeared along
with the events.

Thermal infrared geostationary satellite sensor data application for prediction and monitoring earthquake in Algeria

Titre: Thermal infrared geostationary satellite sensor data application for prediction and monitoring earthquake in Algeria
Auteur(s): Hassini, Abdelatif
Résumé: The modern operational space-borne optical sensors in the thermal
infrared spectrum allow monitoring of the Earth’s thermal field for detection of
pre-earthquake thermal infrared (TIR) anomaly in land surface temperature in
and around epicentral areas. Based on the concept that stress in rocks in
tectonically-active regions may be manifested as temperature variation through
energy transformation process, remote sensing-based thermal technique has
been employed recently. A new method called Active Earthquake Prediction
Algorithm (AEPA) using an acquired thermal infrared time series satellite
sensors datasets is developed and applied in this research. This approach can
depict some anomalous increases in surface temperature that occur before an
earthquake. Some past earthquakes in Algeria were analysed for studying
successively before, during and after, and spatially close to, a significant
earthquake continuous satellite data recording. The study was successful in
detecting pre-earthquake thermal anomalies prior to all these natural disasters.

Remote Sensed Land Surface Temperature Anomalies for Earthquake Prediction

Titre: Remote Sensed Land Surface Temperature Anomalies for Earthquake Prediction
Auteur(s): Hassini, Abdelatif
Résumé: Thermal anomaly; Earthquake; RST; MODIS satellite data; LST; Ambient temperature
Abstract. Thermal anomaly Detection prior to earthquake events has been widely confirmed by
researchers over the past decade. In this paper, we use robust satellite technique approach (RST) on
a collection of six years of MODIS satellite data, representing land surface temperature (LST)
images to predict 21st May 2003 Boumerdes Algeria earthquake. The thermal anomalies results
were compared with the ambient temperature variation measured in three meteorological stations of
Algerian National Office of Meteorology (ONM) (DELLYS-AFIR, TIZI-OUZOU, and DAR-ELBEIDA).
The results confirm the importance of robust satellite technique as an approach highly
effective for prediction and monitoring the earthquakes.
