Titre: Defiant Nature
Auteur(s): Houneida, Benmahidi
Ecofeminism examines the interconnections between the oppression of women and the exploitation of nature, challenging the patriarchal dualisms and hierarchical structures that have historically legitimized both forms of domination. However, ecofeminist scholarship has faced criticism for its tendency, particularly in some of its earlier formulations, to privilege the experiences of white Western women while overlooking the diverse historical, cultural, and socioeconomic realities of women in the Global South. In response to these limitations, this thesis explores the intersection of ecofeminism and postcolonial literature through an analysis of three novels written by women: The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga, and Love in the Kingdom of Oil by Nawal El Saadawi. Drawing on ecofeminist and postcolonial theoretical perspectives, the study examines how the selected works represent the interrelated structures of gender-based oppression, colonial and neocolonial power, and environmental exploitation. It also investigates how these narratives challenge dominant ideologies; expose the unequal distribution of power, and articulate possibilities for female agency, resistance, and empowerment. Through a qualitative approach grounded in close textual analysis and contextual interpretation, the thesis considers the specific cultural, historical, and political circumstances shaping each literary work. By bringing these texts into dialogue, the study highlights the diversity of postcolonial women’s experiences and demonstrates the value of an inclusive, context-sensitive ecofeminist approach to literary criticism. Ultimately, it contributes to a broader understanding of how postcolonial women’s literature interrogates the interconnected dynamics of gender, ecology, and power.

Some Implications and Applications of Sociolinguistics in Education: The Case of English Language Teaching in Algeria.

Titre: Some Implications and Applications of Sociolinguistics in Education: The Case of English Language Teaching in Algeria.
Auteur(s): Moussadek, Imane Hafida
Résumé: It is universally acknowledged that English is playing an increasingly dominant role all over the world, whether for economic, political, technological, educational, or entertaining reasons. Hence, learning English became primordial in order to thrive and survive the ups and downs of the work, study, business, and leisure sectors. Foreign students, seeking to enhance their English proficiency for academic or travel purposes, are increasingly enrolling in English classes. Therefore, the current trends in sociolinguistics and educational implications include the use of World Englishes, English as a lingua franca, or English as an international language. Many factors come into play when EFL instruction takes place, including the language, the instructor, the students, the pedagogy, and the setting.
Our investigation into English teaching in Algeria revealed that using a method of initially presenting the bigger picture and then zooming on a particular detail was a suitable strategy. We need to clarify the blurred lines and infinite questions surrounding the teaching of English variation in Algeria. In addition, we analyze the underlying causes of this avoidance in order to determine the most effective strategies for its implementation.
This study highlights a selection of approved methods for teaching EFL adult learners English language variation, language awareness, and language attitude. We cite remarkable works that encourage the integration of language variation into students' curricula, scrutinizing the reasons and methods behind its use.
The study indicates that adult learners at Oran University exhibit a preference for American English over British English, although they lack knowledge regarding the linguistic distinctions between the two. In addition, other ‘World Englishes’ are highly stigmatized, and teacher training programs do not incorporate instruction on language variation awareness or attitudes, which students express curiosity about right from the start.
From a holistic standpoint and considering the viewpoints of educators, the findings of this study offer significant understanding of the practical uses and consequences of sociolinguistic variation in the field of education.

POLITICAL DISSENT IN THE NOVELS OF MAILER AND VIDAL

Titre: POLITICAL DISSENT IN THE NOVELS OF MAILER AND VIDAL
Auteur(s): MAHDJOUB, ARAIBI Hicham
Résumé: This thesis examines the representation of political dissent in four of Norman Mailer’s

novels and Gore Vidal’s series of historical novels often called the “narratives of Empire”. It, accordingly, tests the claim that the historical novel as a sub-genre may overlap with the political novel, and can be used as a means of political dissent just as it may serve as a
vehicle to glorify nationalism. It argues that the two chosen writers do not refrain from

discussing dissent and dissenters in their novelistic production. It does so by, first, pointing

out the portrayal of American presidents as a manifestation of the authors’ opposition to post- war American policies. Then, it demonstrates that Mailer reflects his passionate opposition and vehement criticism of American presidents (who allowed U.S. military intervention in
Vietnam, Iraq and other countries) in his The Armies of the Night, Why Are We in Vietnam, and that Vidal does the same in Lincoln, Empire, Washington DC, and 1876. The
representation of American presidents is also studied to find out whether the authors confirm the glorious image of the presidential institution or reveal the reality, whether they distinguish the presidents from the presidency, the office from its occupants. It equally deals with the
presidential “inherent powers” in wartime and whether they are abused to encroach on the dearly-held, much-celebrated American individual liberties. The representation of the long
process of presidential election in Vidal’s Washington D.C. and 1876 is then elucidated.

Eventually, focus is concentrated on the role of intellectuals in opposing the American

political status-quo. Because politics is usually the playground of the intellectual, an inquiry is carried out about the political positions taken by Mailer’s and Vidal’s intellectual characters in Barbary Shore and Washington D.C., respectively, followed by their categorisation either as conformists or dissenters. Finally, media’s double role both as repressive tool against political dissidents and as vehicle for political opposition is explored, with particular attention to the
mainstream papers’ distorting coverage of Mailer’s march on the Pentagon as narrated in The Armies of the Night. Adopting the comparative approach, and historicism when needed, this thesis concludes with the convictions that Mailer and Vidal spilled their proverbial political opposition on their novels, using them to draw parallels with and decry an unsatisfying
reality; that postmodern novels are not necessarily apolitical; and that the two contemporary authors share too many things in political stance and fiction-writing than an observer of their personal enmity might believe.

ABSTRACT
This thesis examines the representation of political dissent in four of Norman Mailer’s
novels and Gore Vidal’s series of historical novels often called the “narratives of Empire”.
The representation of the long
process of presidential election in Vidal’s Washington D.C. and 1876 is then elucidated.
viii
